Safe in the car seat: from baby to child
Car seats are super important: a car seat protects your child in the event of a collision. Are you looking for a car seat, but don’t know which one is best for your child? This blog will help you choose the right one.
In Europe you must transport children up to 135 cm in a car seat. Until your child reaches that height, you may already be four seats ahead. There are many different types of car seats for sale. Below we explain which seats are suitable for your baby, toddler and older child.
The baby car seat
You can transport your baby in a baby car seat right from birth. The baby car seat is suitable for children up to 83 cm. That is approximately until the age of 14 months. Your child will then weigh approximately 13 kilos. But your child’s height is the most important. For the safety of your child, it is best to place the car seat on the back seat. Transport your child backwards for as long as possible. This rule does not just apply: the neck is more vulnerable in young children because they have a relatively heavy head. If your baby sits backwards, their neck is better protected during a collision. For car seats that meet the latest regulations (R129), rear-facing is even mandatory.
The toddler car seat
When your child no longer fits in the baby car seat, switch to the toddler car seat. These car seats are suitable for children from 60 to 105 cm, up to the age of approximately 4 years and weighing up to 18 kg. For the safety of your toddler, it is best to place the car seat on the back seat. In many toddler car seats your child looks forward. But in the latest car seats you can or must transport your child backwards. That is the safest way, even for toddlers. And if you have the right seat, you still have to secure it properly, just like your child, of course. For example, did you know that 40% of babies and toddlers sit too loosely in their car seats?
The child car seat
When your child no longer fits in the toddler car seat, switch to the child car seat. The child car seat ensures that your child sits higher, making the regular car seat belt fit better. Because you use that with a highchair. Children must be transported in a car seat until they are 135 cm tall. There are child car seats with and without a backrest (the latter is also called a booster seat). We recommend a child car seat with a backrest. This is the best for the safety of your child. Because it provides extra protection in the event of a side impact.
